NEW YORK -- After less than a year of dating, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are engaged, People and Star magazines report.

Citing a "close friend" of Affleck, People reported that the actor has been privately spreading the news. A friend of Garner told the magazine months ago that she'd been expecting Affleck to propose.

There was no comment yet from publicists for the two.

Affleck was famously engaged to another Jennifer -- Jennifer Lopez -- back in 2002. They called it off more than year later.

He met Garner, star of TV's "Alias," while shooting the action flick "Daredevil." There's apparently been an effort to give this relationship a much lower profile than the one with "J.Lo." Affleck has made only one public appearance with Garner -- at the 2004 World Series in Boston.

Garner met her former husband, actor Scott Foley, on the set of "Felicity." The two were married in October 2000 and divorced in March 2004.
