SAPD DWI arrests up over last year during Fiesta

Police say more officers out looking for drunken drivers

SAN ANTONIO – As cups overflow at Fiesta, so do the DWI arrests.

There have been 142 DWI arrests through Wednesday, the seventh day of Fiesta, according to tentative numbers from the San Antonio Police Department. That outpaces the 101 arrests the Police Department made during the same period last year.

San Antonio police made 184 total DWI arrests last year during all 11 days of Fiesta.

SAPD spokesman Officer Doug Greene said there are more officers out looking for drunken drivers this year, which is adding to the number of arrests. The larger number is both bad and good, he said.

"If we can take somebody off the streets that's been drinking and driving — we haven't had anybody killed in a fatality accident — we take that as a win in our book any day," Greene said.

Not all of those arrests are from Fiesta, but with the party continuing this weekend, police want drivers to be careful and plan ahead on how they'll get home.

Greene suggests staying at a hotel, having a designated driver or using a ride-sharing service.

For a group of women at Fiesta de los Reyes Thursday, the last option was their go-to plan.

"You don't have to worry about getting in trouble or anything like that," Alesia Sanchez said.
