Did you know there are over 25 different species of whales in the Gulf of Mexico?

“Visitors to the museum can marvel at everything Texas and so much more. And now, the adventure expands to the Gulf of Mexico and the oceans where you can learn about whales, and what we can contribute to the Texas whale story,” said Marise McDermott, president and CEO of the Witte Museum.

A whale lab will let visitors explore the biology of whales and learn about their lives underwater.

The sound lab lets visitors experience the beauty of the whale’s call and guests can climb inside an anatomically accurate replica of a blue whale’s heart that’s big enough to sit in.

Several small films can be viewed throughout the exhibit including one about Paikea and the traditions of the whale riders.

Some island cultures fashioned deadly weapons from whale bones and teeth, which are also on display.

This family-friendly exhibit opens to the public Saturday and will be at the Witte until Labor Day, Sept. 4.
