Kerrville, Texas -- Young burn survivors from across Texas learned how to cope with their injuries while having a good time at Camp David in Kerr County this week."The main objective of this camp is to teach these kids they don't have to be afraid to jump back into the pool of life," said San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood. "They can still continue their lives and be whatever they want to be and do whatever they want to and not let the burns hold them hostage."The annual camp is organized by the Texas Burn Survivors Society and takes place in the Lions Club Camp just outside of Kerrville.
The camp, which if free for the participants, offers special facilities for crafts, environmental and wildlife study, as well as a wide variety of water-related sports. The camp began after the founder of the Texas Burn Survivors Society, David Jayne, felt the need to help others who had suffered a similar fate like he did.Almost 50 years ago, Jayne suffered horrific burns to 80 percent of his body in a military helicopter accident, and now he is helping children to cope with the pain of fire injuries. On Wednesday, the SAFD Bikers Club presented Jayne a check for more than $11,000 to help him keep his commitment to the children for years to come."It's just the most wonderful camp and we're married to this camp, for the rest of my existence and hopefully for the rest of my organization's existence," said Jayne. The camp, which runs from July 6 through July 12, has proved successful in bringing a smile to childrens' faces."It means a lot to me because it supports other burned children," said Justin Rodriguez, a burn survivor. "It's a lot of fun."
