NEISD new bus safety cameras catch hundreds of violators

District officials look to increased safety for students riding buses

SAN ANTONTIO – The North East Independent School District has a new bus safety mechanism in place.

It's installed on nearly every bus, and it came at no cost to the district.

Earl Stewart, NEISD's operations director, said the system comes with seven exterior cameras, as well as several new interior cameras. Each of the exterior cameras is angled differently so that it can record several lanes of traffic and record a vehicle's license plate number.

So far, in the first four weeks, the system has caught 900 violators. That's a shocking number. But before the new system was installed, drivers had to record a potential violator manually.

The review process is strenuous.

Once a possible violator is flagged, personnel from the district review the video. If staff members believe a violation occurred, district police will also look at the video. A citation would then be sent to the person with the registered license plate.

NEISD transports 50,000 students each day -- 25,000 each way.

Stewart and NEISD Transportation director Jack De Forrest believe this is a better way to help students stay safe on their way to and from school.
