LYTLE, Texas -- Jesse Martinez describes his barbecue place in Lytle, Frontline BBQ, as a "little hole in the wall."
But Martinez may need a bigger place soon if he's able to come out tops at a national barbecue contest.
Martinez and his wife, Martha, are getting ready to go up against the big boys of barbecue at the Pro Bullriders Association Show at the AT&T Center on Aug. 1 and 2.
The big cook off, sponsored by Rib America, will feature competition such as "Wilma Hands" of Tennessee, "Smoking Rednecks" of Florida and "Arkansas Porkies."
Martinez, who has only been in the business for six years, thinks he may have a big advantage.
The competition, he says, has smokers that are electrical or natural gas.
"Ours are nothing but wood, so when they pop that stack, smoke coming out, there's a difference. There's smoked Texas barbecue there," he explained.
If Martinez wins, he would have come a long way. When he first started in the barbecue business, he was selling sandwiches at Fiesta.
