SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District issued a health advisory on Thursday for residents who live near a huge burning mound of mulch in Helotes. The health advisory states that smoke and ash from the fire, which has been smoldering since Christmas Day, could create breathing problems for people who have asthma, allergies, lung and heart problems. Pregnant women could also be at risk.Health officials urged residents to stay indoors, reduce physical activity and reduce sources of indoor air pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, gas, propane, wood burning stoves and furnaces.
Deborah Coley, who lives a few blocks away from the fire, said that she no longer allows her asthmatic 3-year-old son to ride his bicycle outside."I'm worried about the long-term effects to his asthma and what it will do down the road," Coley said.In the meantime, the Bexar County Commissioners Court is considering a plan that would temporarily house residents who live near the burning mound and who have respiratory problems is hotel rooms.Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal next week. Also, the Northside Independent School District is implementing a temporary transfer policy for students at O'Connor High School and Helotes Elementary School, if their parents request it.
