SAN ANTONIO -- Every year, the Door in the Wall advocacy group holds a holiday party for disabled people and those with special needs.
Sunday, it almost didn't happen because when organizers showed up at the La Villita assembly hall, they found chains and padlocks on the doors.
"We've called and called, nobody at CPS (Energy) is returning our calls. We've called the police they can't do anything, the city can't do anything," said Sheila Brown, who was trying to get into the party.
"I've been doing this event for people with disabilities for 10 years and this is the first time nobody was here to let us in," said event organizer Barbara Blair.
She had signed a contract to lease the hall for $700 to host 400 guests. When they couldn't get in, she found a way.
"Like when the Grinch stole Christmas, we're going to try to find our Christmas spirit and push on," she said.
With the help of the city Parks Department and police, the party moved across the street to the arts village. However, with so many guests, it was less than ideal.
"This is horrible, because you have a lot of people in there that are diabetic and elderly, and they can't stand the heat, and if gets too hot, they're going to have to leave," said guest Margaret Schreiber.
She wasn't sure who to blame, however.
"Somebody dropped the ball and they don't want to admit who it was. I feel like battering the door down with my wheelchair," she said.
CPS Energy says it dropped the ball and will refund the money for the event.
