SAN ANTONIO -- Pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Tobias rarely meets children who were wearing bicycle helmets.
"I usually meet kids that weren't wearing their helmets," he said. "Or weren't wearing their helmets properly."
Bicycle accidents are the number one sports-related reason children are brought to emergency rooms, according to Consumer Reports, which crash-tested a dozen bike helmets for kids. Tests included simulating what happens when a child's head hits the pavement.
The tests completed, Consumer Reports recommended the $20 Schwinn Thrasher. Just as important as a good helmet is a good fit, according to Rich Handel with Consumer Reports.
"A good-fitting helmet should fit snugly even before you tighten the straps," he said.
The helmet should be level on the head, have no more than one or two fingers' widths above the brow, and the buckle should be centered under the chin, he added.
