Suicide prevention available online, on the phone

SAN ANTONIO – There are many ways to get help if you or someone you know is thinking about suicide. You can confide in a trusted family member, friend, counselor, teacher or member of the clergy.

If you're more comfortable talking to someone you don't know personally, here are some of the options:

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-TALK (8255) This hotline is staffed 24 hours a day and is confidential. It includes resources for anyone who is contemplating suicide and for people who may know someone who needs help. The site also has an online chat forum.

Veteran Crisis Line - 1-800-273-8255 This hotline for active U.S. service members, veterans and family members is staffed 24 hours a day and is confidential. Those needing help can talk by phone, by text using the number 838255, or online.

The Trevor Project - 1-866-488-7386 This 24-hour hotline provides help for LGBT youth, friends and family members. Those who prefer to text can send "Trevor" to 1-202-304-1200 on Thursdays and Fridays between 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. EST/1 p.m. - 5 p.m. PT. The site also has an online chat forum, TrevorSpace.

SafeCallNow - 206-459-3020 This confidential hotline for all public safety employees, emergency services personnel and their family members is staffed 24 hours a day. This page has information for anyone wanting to report posts on Facebook that may indicate a public safety employee who may be having suicidal thoughts. Anyone seeking help or information can also submit an email here.

If you see someone post on Facebook that he/she is suicidal, you can report that information to Facebook here. They will work to get that person help.
