Race Discrimination Lawsuit Against Xerox Planned

Workers Claim Hostile Environment

POSTED: 10:42 a.m. EDT August 8, 2002

Lawyers for a group of black employees at Xerox in Ohio say they plan to file a racial discrimination lawsuit against the company.

The lawsuit stems from findings by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a federal agency that investigates discrimination complaints. The EEOC determined that four black employees suffered violations of their civil rights at the company's Sharonville, Ohio, facility, Cincinnati TV station WLWT reported.

Lawyers for six black workers from Texas, New York, California and Georgia said they plan to file the lawsuit in the next few weeks on behalf of about 300 current and former employees.

The agency said that black workers in three Cincinnati Xerox facilities were subjected to a racially hostile work environment. The workers complained of racial jokes and slurs, intimidation and unfair firing practices. The report also stated that black dolls were hung in nooses by the receiving dock at the plant.

One of the workers, Shawn Frierson, said he quit because the environment, which included racial slurs. He said the pressure caused him to become short-tempered with his children, Robertson reported.

"The department was so bad, all the black folk would sit on one side, the white folk on the other," Frierson said. "It really just built up in me. I just got to the point where I said enough was enough."

Frierson claimed his managers were aware of the problems, but did nothing.

A Xerox spokesman said the company's own investigation into the complaints has not shown any evidence of discrimination. Officials also said they're proud of their ethnic diversity, saying 17 percent of the company's U.S. workforce is black, 8 percent Hispanic and 5 percent Asian.
