Commissioners Consider Four-Day Workweek

High Gas Prices Taking Toll On Employees

Bexar County commissioners were presented with a report Tuesday on the pros and cons of implementing a four-day workweek.

Commissioners are considering the idea due to the high price of gasoline.

Web Poll: Four-Day Workweek OK?

"It's getting very expensive to get to work," said Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.

But Wolff said that he has no intention of closing the courthouse and employees would be required to work a flex schedule.

There are two major considerations that commissioners, who would need to approve the idea, must consider. Will a four-day workweek be cost effective and what impact would it have on the criminal justice system?

District Attorney Susan Reed said that employees in her office overwhelmingly are in favor of a four-day workweek. But Reed said she has concerns.

"Is it going to overcrowd the jail?" Reed said. "Is it going to decrease the depositions that we have? To get justice, I've to get those cases going."

Wolff added that it would be up to elected officials, like Reed, to make the plan work without disrupting services.
