SAN ANTONIO -- The unemployment rate in San Antonio jumped to 6.9 percent in June compared to 5.8 percent in May, the Texas Workforce Commission said Friday.
The Texas jobless rate also rose in June to 9.5 percent compared to 7.1 percent in May, the Texas Workforce Commission said. Despite the rise in the unemployment rate, San Antonio and Texas are still faring better than the national rate, which was 7.1 percent in May.
As unemployment rises, so do the numbers of people at the Workforce Solutions career centers. At the center on South Flores, Frank Ruiz was working on his resume.
"I've been hitting it hard for a month and I haven't got anything -- no results," he said.
Ruiz got out of the army a month ago. "Actually, I went to talk to a recruiter yesterday to see if I could get back in," he said.
Joanne Velasquez said she comes to the career center every day to try to find a job, preferably in medical billing.
"I thought it would be easier," Velasquez said. "I got laid off my job after 13 years, from one day to the next."
She's been drawing unemployment insurance since December, but said it's not enough. "Every month I'm on the verge of getting evicted, you know, or something."
Industries hardest hit statewide were trade, transportation and utilities, which dropped 21,700 jobs in June. Professional and business services suffered a loss of 11,900 jobs.
Employment in manufacturing across Texas fell by 10,300 jobs in June. Construction lost 10,200 jobs.
Financial activities and leisure and hospitality industries recorded small gains over the month, with 1,000 and 900 jobs respectively.
