SAN ANTONIO – Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death, and the No. 1 cause of disability in the United States.
To mark National Stroke Awareness Month, University Hospital's walk-through giant brain was on display Friday. It was a KSAT Community and partners event.
Stroke experts were also on hand to educate visitors about how strokes can be prevented.
Doctors said it's critical for everyone to know the fast model when it comes to recognizing signs of stroke and calling 911 right away.
"What we're doing here is just to increase awareness in the community," Dr. Andrew Slusher said. "It's important that people realize the importance of coming to the hospital very fast when they develop these symptoms. That's one of the reasons we use the F.A.S.T scale; Face, arms, speech and time are four important things to look out for."
Major stroke risk factors include diabetes and high blood pressure.
