SAN ANTONIO -

Think beans are a throw-away?

Think again.

These beans will win your heart and more -- they'll win your plate.

Old Settlers Beans
2 lbs. ground beef
1/2 of a white or yellow onion, chopped
1 lb. bacon
2 cans pork & beans
2 cans butter beans
2 cans kidney beans
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
4 Tbsp. molasses
Salt, pepper, garlic salt to taste

Directions:
In large stock pot, brown the beef on medium heat with the onions (season as desired). Set aside. Cook bacon (on medium heat). Do not drain bacon grease (some argue this is very important to flavor). Chop bacon. Combine in pot (keep bacon to the side) beef, beans, ketchup, sugars, and molasses. Mix together well. Cook on medium heat until the mixture is warmed through. Add crumbled bacon. Stir.

What you will be left with is a complex mixture of beef, bacon, and beans that satisfies the palate and leaves you wondering what you wanted BBQ for in the first place when you had such magnificent beans.
