Shippensburg University students can buy contraceptive for $25
A university in Pennsylvania is under scrutiny for offering the morning-after pill to students in a campus vending machine.
Shippensburg University began offering the emergency contraceptive Plan B in a vending machine along with condoms and pregnancy tests after a survey found that 85 percent of its students were in favor of it, Vice President for Student Affairs Roger Serr told The Associated Press.
Students can buy the morning-after pill for $25, the school’s cost to the pharmaceutical company, which is cheaper than at off-campus pharmacies, according to Time magazine.
The university does not cover or subsidize the drug.
Serr told Philadelphia TV station WHP that the university’s female population purchases between 350 to 400 doses of the pill each year.
“The machine is really used as much for privacy as anything else, if a person wants to come in,” he said.
