San Antonio boy suffers from rare form of epilepsy
Light, sound, excitement cause severe seizures
Imagine being a kid, and not being able to go outside and play.
That is the reality for one San Antonio boy who has the rarest and most severe form of epilepsy. Aeidan Gresham, 8, gets a seizure anytime he hears a loud sound or even if there's too many people in the room.
Aeidan is currently confined to a small room in the house because of his sensitivity to light, sound or any sort of commotion.
"Pretty much any form of excitement,” said his mother, Laura Gresham. “Whether it could be someone happy or laughing - or anything. Especially when his sisters want to run around and play, that gets him really worked up."
Gresham said her son suffers seizures daily, sometimes several times a day.
The seizures started when Aeidan was 3-years-old and progressively got worse.
Because of his condition, he requires 24-7 care, meaning his mom must stay home full-time and his sisters can't even play in their own rooms.
"It's been a sudden shock on the family,” said Gresham. “Just to see him go from this beautiful little boy to someone who can barely hold his head up or breathe on his own, basically."
Now, the family hopes to provide some sort of comfort for Aeidan as he battles his illness.
His family wants to convert their garage into a sound-proof, temperature-controlled room where Aeidan can play.
"Right now, he can't be in the same room with his family at any given time,” said Gresham. “It's usually one or two people at a time, and we have to whisper. We have to keep things really quiet for him. We're hoping that this room will provide him the therapeutic needs that he needs to where he can play with his sisters and something he can use long term."
The Make-A-Wish Foundation has offered to furnish Aeidan's room, however, the garage must be fully converted first.
The family is hosting a spaghetti plate fundraiser on Monday, July 9, at Zio’s Italian Kitchen, 7824 Pat Booker Road in Live Oak, Texas.
The family has also set up a website for donations. You can find it here.
