If Stone Oak residents have an appetite for grocery stores, it's being satiated with two new options.

A small, fresh-market style HEB is set to open by July 4 and a Trader Joe's is on track to open at the end of the year.

The HEB under construction at the corner of Wilderness Oak Parkway and Hardy Oak will have a unique flavor. It will feature a restaurant called Oaks Crossing.

"This is not just a grocery store," said HEB spokeswoman Dya Campos. "It's going to have a world-class restaurant that will be a destination for families. So we're focusing on more than just groceries."

The store will be a smaller-scale, fresh-market style grocery offering "different" products, according to Campos.

Nearby, heavy equipment was turning the dirt for the city's second Trader Joe's. The store at Loop 1604 near Stone Oak Parkway is targeting a late 2014 opening.

With Green Fields Market, SuperTarget and Whole Foods close by, it's a new grocery game in Stone Oak.

"I think that's good," said resident Marta Crawford. "Maybe a little bit more competition will be good."

Shopper Josie Arnold does most of her shopping at HEB Plus, but likes the convenience of Green Fields and specialty offerings at other stores.

"I love Trader Joe's," she said. "I'm on a gluten-free diet, so both that and Whole Foods are nice options for the special needs of our family."

Two big HEB stores and a Walmart Superstore are also within a couple miles, so there is no shortage of groceries in Stone Oak. However, the area has also seen a people boom, nearly tripling in population in the past 15 years.

To attract customers, grocers cater to the clientele and carve out their own niche.

For example, the Stone Oak HEB will be more upscale market than superstore.
