Camp teaches kids healthy living to defend against Type 2 diabetes

American Diabetes Association teams up with Texas Diabetes Institute

SAN ANTONIO – A five-day long camp is teaching kids ways to live a healthy lifestyle and beat the odds of a diabetes diagnosis.

The American Diabetes Association is teaming up with the Texas Diabetes Institute for the third annual Camp PowerUp.

The participating kids are learning about how things like portion control and sleep can affect the body.

They're taking part in fun activities, but they're also getting a wellness education and learning about diagnosis and prevention.

"It's really teaching what diabetes is, what are the risk factors for it, and what are the things we can do to decrease our risk for developing it," Camp PowerUp medical director Nila Escaname said.

One in three children in San Antonio is overweight or obese, a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, which tends to be more aggressive in children than in adults.

Camp PowerUp wraps up Friday.
