National League Game Summary - Houston At Milwaukee

POSTED: Friday, July 25, 2008

(Sports Network) - Wandy Rodriguez allowed just one run over six solid innings, and the Houston Astros stopped the Milwaukee Brewers' eight- game win streak with a 3-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series at Miller Park.

Rodriguez (6-3) held the Brewers to just three hits, striking out seven and walking three for the Astros, who snapped a four-game losing streak. The Houston bullpen followed with three scoreless innings, and Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his 26th save.

"I worked my change-up tonight and I had it working well," Rodriguez said. "I was happy, that's what I needed."

Lance Berkman went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run for Houston, while Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee had two hits apiece.

Corey Hart went 2-for-4 and Mike Cameron doubled in the lone run for the Brewers, who hadn't lost since an 8-2 setback against Cincinnati on July 12. Manny Parra (9-3) was charged with all three runs on eight hits in six-plus frames and dropped a decision for the first time since May 5 at Houston, a span of 14 starts.

"I've been pitching in and out of trouble all year," Parra said. "I can't blame this on being tired."

The Astros couldn't muster much offense against Parra until the seventh, when they finally broke through to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. A walk to Ty Wigginton, a single by Pence and a bunt from Humberto Quintero loaded the bases with nobody out before Parra was lifted for David Riske. However, pinch- hitter Mark Loretta and Kaz Matsui put the Astros on top with consecutive sacrifice flies, and Berkman later hit a run-scoring single. Berkman was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, but the damage was done.

Houston's bullpen finished the job, with Chris Sampson and Wesley Wright keeping the Brewers at bay through the eighth before Valverde worked around Hart's leadoff double in the ninth for the save.

"Wandy is a guy, he's pitched very, very well against us over the last two years," said Brewers manager Ned Yost. "We got him a time or two, but for the most part, we get these type of games."

Milwaukee picked up the lead in the second when Hart led off with a single, moved to second when Rodriguez was called for a balk and Cameron laced a one- out RBI double to deep left-center.

The Astros didn't threaten against Parra until the sixth, when a Matsui single and a walk to Berkman put runners on first and second with one out. Lee drilled a single to right, but Hart threw out Matsui at the plate, and Parra then escaped the jam when Miguel Tejada grounded out to second.

Game Notes:

Berkman's RBI was his 75th of the season...Lee extended his hit streak to 10 games...Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun walked in the first inning, reaching base in his 10th straight plate appearance. The streak was snapped when he struck out in the third...The Brewers were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
