SAN ANTONIO -- The federal government is warning consumers to avoid being scammed by telemarketers offering federal grant money.
Scam artists are calling consumers across the country to tell them they qualify for thousands of dollars in federal grant money.
Consumers are told they can get a list of grants if they pay a processing fee up front.
Jason Campbell, a mortgage loan officer experienced in government grants, was recently targeted by the scam.
"My first thought in my mind, is, 'OK, let's see what this is all about.' Everybody could use a little bit of free money," said Campbell.
The caller offered to qualify Campbell for a federal grant up to $25,000.
"He said you can use it for your personal bills, you can pay off your credit card, you can use it for business, if you want a business grant," said Campbell.
The caller then asked Campbell for personal financial information, including his bank account number.
"This guy is talking about wiring a grant directly into my account," said Campbell.
Campbell quickly realized he was being scammed.
12 On Your Side called the Florida company that contacted Campbell. The owner said his company is legitimate and is itself a victim of con artists who are using the company's name.
The federal government says it does not employ telemarketers to pitch its federal grant program.
