SAN ANTONIO -- A jury decided Monday that a former East Central High School ROTC instructor should get eight years probation as punishment for having an improper relationship with a female cadet.
Jurors deliberated for a little over an hour before determining punishment for Master Sgt. Fred Casanova, who was found guilty Thursday.
During closing arguments, prosecutor Barry Elliot told jurors that the defendant should spend time behind bars.
"This defendant deserves some prison time. How much? That's up to you," he said.
But defense attorney Desi Martinez asked the jury for mercy.
"Give him a chance at probation, that's all," Martinez said. "You can send him to prison if he doesn't comply, but give him a chance."
During the trial, the female cadet testified that Casonova touched her through her clothing and made sexually suggestive remarks in 2007.
Casanova must also pay a $4,000 fine and register as a sex offender.
