'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' teams with Morgan's Wonderland to build home
Community members needed to volunteer
When former builder and developer Gordon Hartman created Morgan's Wonderland, it brought the community together to give back to special needs individuals. Recently ABC'S "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" approached him with a new challenge: to build a home for a deserving family in San Antonio.
"This will be a heart-warming opportunity to really help a family here in San Antonio, but (by) the same token, also be able to have fun and to bring awareness to giving back to the community," said Hartman.
Hartman will tackle the project on behalf of Morgan's Wonderland. It's the first time a nonprofit has been chosen to build a home for the show.
The recipient family will be chosen by the show's producers. The location of the home is being kept secret for now, but the home will be built in January. The show will air in the fall.
Hartman said one of the biggest challenges is the time frame. Once construction begins, volunteers will have only 108 hours to build the home.
"Basically, every 15 minutes of the 108 hours has to be very structured and everything has to work right in place. That's very challenging. We love that challenge and we think that's something we're able to do," said Hartman. "We found (that) out when we produced Morgans Wonderland. Many people wondered (if) we could do it as quick as it was done, and the reason we were able to achieve it is because people did come together. I know that's what's going to happen."
Thousands of volunteers will be needed to help make the project a success. Along with skilled laborers, volunteers will be needed for general-labor assignments, such as registration, serving food, safety, traffic control and site cleanup. Volunteers must be 18 or older.
Details of a pep rally for volunteers will be announced before construction begins in mid-January.
Late Thursday, ABC announced the show was being canceled. However, this home makeovers will be one of the last featured on the show. It will air in late 2012.
