The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon is a week away and one woman will be walking to honor her fiancé, Jorge Fernandez.

Fernandez died after crossing the finish line at last year's half marathon.

"He was everything to me," said Cyndi Mendez, Jorge's fiancé. "He was generous, loving, and caring."

Mendez said Fernandez was many things to many people, but to her, he was the best person she's ever known.

"He was such a remarkable person," Mendez said. "I want everyone to know who he was."

Mendez said last November as they completed the half marathon, Jorge crossed the finish line, collapsed and passed away.

"We don't know why," she said. "He was healthy and fit and strong and young. There is no rhyme or reason why what happened, happened."

But, motivated by Fernandez's spirit and healthy lifestyle, Mendez, along with friends and family, decided to form the group, "Team Jorge" to walk in this year's Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon in his honor.

"Just to carry his name on forever," said Paul Chalk, Jorge's friend. "I want to do it every year and I hope each year it gets better and better and bigger and bigger."

Mendez and Team Jorge have also created the Jorge Fernandez Scholarship Fund for local students who want to pursue nursing at Texas Tech University, the same school where Fernandez graduated.

"These students will become nurses and they will continue to carry on his legacy," she said. "And, continue telling his story."

So far, Team Jorge is at the halfway mark to reaching their goal of raising $15,000 for the scholarship fund.
