1 Dallas Cowboy killed, 1 charged in crash
Irving police arrest Josh Brent for intoxication manslaughter
A Dallas Cowboy is dead and his teammate is arrested for intoxication manslaughter after a fatal car crash in Irving early Saturday morning.
Jerry Brown, a former defensive linemen for the San Antonio Talons, died Saturday morning. Brown was the passenger in a car driven by Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent. Police said Brent was driving at a high rate of speed when he hit a curb and the car flipped.
“We’re all in shock,” said Talons Head Coach Lee Johnson. “He was always smiling. He was a happy guy. I really had a connection to him because he had been from my home town.”
According to authorities, Brown was thrown from the vehicle and was unconscious when officers arrived at the crash scene. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A St. Louis, Missouri native, Brown helped the Talons reach the playoffs in their first season, but he didn’t make the post season roster because he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts in the summer.
“His motor definitely belonged in the NFL, and obviously he got an opportunity to go and I thought it was going to be an opportunity for him to show what he can do,” Johnson said.
San Antonio Talons owner David Lynd said he and his father knew Brown had the talent to play at the next level when they first saw him on the field.
“Him making it to the pros probably cost us the Arena Bowl shot that we would have had,” Lynd said.
The owner said Brown also had the outstanding character to match his natural athletic ability.
“There's a lot of talented athletes, but I think the thing that sets those guys apart is that he was a real professional, a real kind human being.”
Team officials said Brown was expecting a new daughter. Lynd said the Talons will hold several benefits next season to raise money for the child.
Brown had been on and off the practice squad since the Cowboys signed him September 1st.
Police arrested Brent at the scene of the crash and booked him on an intoxication manslaughter charge.
Brent has been a sometime starter for the Cowboys this season.
The Cowboys play the Bengals Sunday in Cincinnati.
Team owner Jerry Jones issued a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."
