Police: Driver was going wrong-way on Interstate 35 near Fischer Road before crash

SAN ANTONIO -

A fiery wrong-way crash in southwest San Antonio killed one person and left another in critical condition.

San Antonio police responded to the scene on Interstate 35 at Loop 410 around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said they found a car that had gone off the I-35 bridge at Fischer Road, and burst into flames.

Just before the accident, police received several calls for a wrong-way driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway.

An Alamo Community College District police officer met the wrong-way driver, and had to swerve into to avoid a head on crash.

The officer turned on his emergency lights on to try to stop the driver and alert oncoming traffic, an SAPD press release stated.

The officer said the wrong-way driver was traveling about 80 miles per hour, and came upon an 18-wheeler.

The 18-wheeler could not pull over and the wrong-way driver went into the median to avoid the collision, then plunged off the bridge into the creek bed below.

The driver and his passenger were both partially ejected, an SAPD release stated.

The car caught fire and the ACCD officer and another witness were able to pull out female passenger.

The driver was trapped underneath when the car became fully engulfed in flames He died at the scene. His name has not been released.

The female passenger was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. Police said the crash remains under investigation.
