10 McCollum students facing criminal charges in food fight

McCollum High School employee injured trying to clean up mess

SAN ANTONIO – Ten McCollum High School students may be in serious legal trouble after starting a food fight at lunch time.

The food fight erupted Thursday about 12:30 p.m. and involved mostly juniors and seniors.

"It was a rowdy food fight. There were plates all over the floor, and corn in the air and some milk cartons as well," said student Adrian Toscano.

Tocano was hit in the shoulder by an orange but wasn't the only one injured.

A school employee was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

"The employee who was injured went to go start to clean up the mess that was left behind and the employee slipped and fell," said Harlandale ISD spokeswoman Leslie Garza.

The 10 students responsible are now facing charges of inciting a riot.

"Inciting a riot is because there was 900 kids in the cafeteria when the food fight started. Everybody rushed out and it caused somewhat of a stampede out there," said Garza.

Senior students may also be denied the opportunity to participate in their graduation commencement ceremony.

The punishment was met with mixed emotions and at least one student who felt it was fair.

"Way too harsh, but the fact that they hurt somebody doing it, that kind of evens it out for me," said Darius Lopez.
