SAN ANTONIO -- More than a dozen Helotes residents gathered in protest Sunday to demand that authorities extinguish a massive compost fire that has burned for almost two weeks.
Angry residents, who live near the fire, said they're ready for someone to take action because they have dealt with the smoke and ash for 13 days.
Protestors let signs speak their minds while their mouths were covered by symbolic masks.
"(I'm) darn sick of it," resident David Galvan said. "(There is) no consideration for people who build their homes here."
Once their message was clear at the scene near the fire, they moved over to city hall where local and state officials were meeting with a fire expert from Fresno, Calif.
TCEQ officials said Sunday findings of air quality samples taken over the last two days show no real health concerns for the general public.
Officials said the tests did show moderate air quality near the area, which does affect people sensitive to the smoke and ash.
Metro Health Official Roger Pollok said the findings are in their preliminary stages and more monitoring needs to be done.
State officials said they will be looking at air quality samples for at least the next seven days.
Bexar County officials said they'll continue to look at air quality issues until the fire is put out.
The owner of the property said he plans to try to put out the fire.
The owner has until Sunday at 1 p.m. to submit a written plan of action to TCEQ.
TCEQ official Cameron Lopez said TCEQ will review the owner's plan to see if it meets their standards.
"If we feel it doesn't adequately address us, we may ask him to redo it or possibly take over the site ourselves," Lopez said.
