SAN ANTONIO -- The parents of a slain 25-year-old video store clerk said Tuesday that the retailer is partially responsible for her death.
In an interview with KSAT 12 News, Randy and Leigh Belken said that EB Games in the 7300 block of San Pedro Avenue was a target for burglars.
The Belkens said that their daughter, Amber Belken, told them that a suspicious person was seen casing the store a few days before Christmas. A few days later, the store was burglarized, the Belkens said. And as recently as two weeks ago, there was an attempted break-in.
On Monday, police found Amber Belken's body in a back room of the store. She was found with a bag over her head and a cut to her index finger on her right hand, police said.
"(EB Games) knew that it was a dangerous situation," said Leigh Belkin. "I don't know why they didn't take precautions."
Police said that Amber Belken turned off the store alarm around 9:12 a.m. when she arrived for her shift, but she never opened the store. Her body was discovered five hours later.
Since cash was missing from the store, police believe that the motive for the killing was money.
Randy Belken said that while the robbers took money, they also took what was "priceless" to him.
"Everybody that met her just fell in love with her," Leigh Belken said.
Amber Belken's last communication was a text message that she sent to her boyfriend saying that she loved him.
A makeshift memorial of flowers was placed on the door of the store, which remained closed on Tuesday.
Anyone with information about the crime are urged to call San Antonio police at 210-207-7635, 210-207-7389 or Crimestoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867).
