SAN ANTONIO -- The former roommate of a woman accused of killing her two children claims the woman abused and yelled obscenities at her infant daughter.
Gloria Ramos said she allowed Valerie Lopez, the mother charged with capital murder in the deaths of 1-year-old Sariyah Garcia and 4-month-old Sebastian Lopez, to stay in her home for four months.
"I saw a lot of abuse on the baby," Ramos said. "She would yell at her and push her away from her."
Ramos' daughter met Lopez while walking along the street on the city's North Side carrying the then-9-month-old Sariyah, Ramos said.
At the time, she was pregnant with Sebastian, Ramos said.
She told Ramos' daughter she was homeless and wanted a glass of water.
Ramos said after Lopez came to live with her she began to see the signs of abuse.
At night, she heard loud slaps and Sariyah crying and saw her bruises.
Ramos said Lopez didn't care about her children.
"Most of her reaction was, 'I don't care. I didn't want her in the first place,'" Ramos said. "She didn't want Sebastian either. She said that if it were up to her she would get rid of the baby."
Ramos blames herself for not taking action.
Ramos said she never called Child Protective Services.
Ramos said she thought Lopez would stop the violence and so she gave her a chance to do so.
Ramos believes Lopez should receive a just punishment for her alleged crimes.
"She should get the same punishment (that) she gave the babies: (the) death penalty," Ramos said.
