SAN ANTONIO -- A 12-year-old boy was credited with helping police arrest a burglary suspect Wednesday afternoon on the city's West Side.
Rudy Avila, his mother and a sibling had just arrived at their home in the 800 block of Crystal when their neighbor told them that a man might be in the back of her home.
Moments later, Avila went to the side of the home and found a man hiding.
"He was trying to call me," Avila said. "He was like, 'Come here, come here.'"
Knowing that police were looking for the man, Avila shouted to officers about his discovery.
Little did Avila know how potentially dangerous the man was.
Police said that the man and another man had just committed a burglary and were in a van when undercover officers with the Repeat Offenders Program pulled the pair over in the 1400 block of Mariposa.
A female officer got out of a police cruiser and displayed her weapon, but that apparently didn't deter the pair, said San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus.
"The suspect's vehicle hit the accelerator ... forcing the detective to jump back in her car and at the same time taking the door off of her car," McManus said.
One of the men then got out of the van and ran inside a home, where he tried to use the telephone, McManus said. Moments later, he tried to hide.
The other man was eventually tracked down and arrested in the 400 block of East Young, police said.
Police said they found several stolen items, including a large TV and some expensive jewelry inside the van.
Both men face attempted capital murder and burglary charges, police said.
The female police officer was not injured.
