HOUSTON -

A 12-year-old boy with autism was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while walking in the street, according to Houston police.

Police said the boy's family reported Alvester Bowens missing around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

About two hours later, Bowens was walking on a high-speed overpass in southwest Houston and struck by a vehicle driven by Gilberto Aguirre, police said.

Investigators said Bowens was walking in the street because there were no sidewalks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aguirre has been charged with DWI. The case is being referred to the District Attorney for possible charges relating to the boy's death.
