SAN ANTONIO -- A large crowd of Fair Oaks residents rallied at a City Council meeting Thursday to complain about a beloved deer killed by officers several weeks ago.
Fair Oaks police said they shot and killed the deer, nicknamed KoKo, because it showed aggression toward a girl.
Residents said the deer didn't have a history of attacking people and it would often eat of the hands of children.
Resident said they want the city to adopt ordinances and give special training to officers to deal with wildlife.
"We just want to make sure that there's a sensitivity to wildlife and to nature in this area," Greg Harmon of the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation said. "I know there is, but we got to get it strong and get it on paper."
He said officers were simply responding to a call of a wild animal that had attacked someone.
The city's mayor said no wrongdoing occurred in the incident.
He said he's asked a state game warden to evaluate the situation and make recommendations.
He also said he's more than willing to make changes, if necessary.
