SAN ANTONIO -- A judge ruled on Wednesday that the the trial of a woman charged in the slayings of her infant son and daughter will take place outside of Bexar County due to a high volume of publicity.
The change of venue comes more than six months after the bodies of Valerie Lopez's children were found wrapped in blankets underneath a home.
Lopez's lawyers had requested the change of venue because of extensive media coverage on the case that could prevent their client from getting a fair trial in a Bexar County courtroom.
Lopez's lawyers argued that it would be difficult to find enough jurors who didn't know about the case.
Defense lawyers also presented numerous newspaper reports and television news reports.
Chris DiMartino, a prosecutor who has tried high-profile cases, was among several witnesses who testified at the hearing.
"I've read the articles that were attached to your motion, and based on that, I would agree that this case has received a lot of publicity in our community," DiMartino said.
Lopez is charged with capital murder in the March slayings.
Lopez's case is scheduled to be tried next May.
In the meantime, the court administrative staff will try to find another location to try the case.
