SAN ANTONIO -- A lawyer accused of defrauding men as part of a sex scam was found guilty Monday night on five counts of theft.
Mary Roberts faces punishment that ranges from a minimum of two years probation to a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Roberts is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
Alan Brown, the defendant's attorney, said that his client was only guilty of cheating on her husband.
"It was a hard case," Brown said. "Just separating sin from breaking the law. She did some acts that society has a tough time acting like they approved of. It was a hard case for jurors. I think they misunderstood what the charge is."
Because of the publicity surrounding the case, Brown said he believed his client would have got a more fair trial outside Bexar County.
During the trial, Roberts testified that she had sex with four different men over a three-week period in 2001.
Trial testimony revealed that after the affairs, Roberts and her husband, Ted, sent the men legal documents threatening to expose the affairs unless the men paid them.
Roberts' husband was found guilty at an earlier trial and was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the scam.
