Police: Mother Killed Child Over Crying

Tamika Cantu Charged With Capital Murder

SAN ANTONIO -- A 22-year-old mother was charged with capital murder Tuesday after she admitted to police that she killed her 4-year-old daughter because the child wouldn't stop crying, police said.

"About 3:30, we received a call from a mother who reported that she had just killed her 4-year-old baby girl by smothering her with a pillow because she couldn't stop her from crying," said San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus.

Tamika Cantu was arrested after police said they found Makala Cantu dead on the couch in an apartment in the 4600 block of East Houston Street.

Nobody else was at home when the child died, police said.

Cantu was being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bond.
