SAN ANTONIO -- A mom helped lead a baseball bat attack on a 14-year-old boy who had shoved her 12-year-old son, sheriff's officials said.
Monica Gonzales, 37, was in the Bexar County Jail on Thursday evening on charges of injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to an arrest affidavit, the 14-year-old claimed the incident was an accident, but Gonzales either didn’t believe or care about the explanation.
“I think she was overzealous trying to protect her child,” sheriff’s investigator Aaron Vonmuldau said.
Investigators said Gonzales, along with her three sons, drove up to the 14-year-old and blocked his escape. Once cornered by Gonzales, deputies said, her 21-year-old son, Jose Gonzales Torres Jr., attacked the 14-year-old with a baseball bat.
“He was able to fling his hands up in front of his face,” Vonmuldau said. “At this time, he’s just got some severe bruising, bone bruising, stuff like that.”
The victim was able to escape and called deputies, but when confronted, Gonzales refused to implicate her eldest son, even denying she had one, investigators said.
“Because of her lack of cooperation at the scene, we could not identify the other male,” Vonmuldau said. “When we finally got him identified, he's already on the run."
Deputies were still searching for Torres on Thursday evening.
