SAN ANTONIO -- Fresh on the heels of the decision to keep West Campus High School open, another local school district is considering its own contractions.
The San Antonio Independent School District, citing steady declines in enrollment over the past decade, is considering closing six schools in an effort to pool resources more efficiently, a district spokeswoman said.
District officials said there are too few students for too many schools and are calling the consolidation talks overdue.
"Nobody wants to see their schools closed," district spokeswoman Carmen Vasquez-Gonzalez said. "This is one of the oldest school districts in the state. It's not easy; if it was easy, we would have done it a long time ago."
Age aside, the district is moving quickly to decide on the fate of six schools: Bowie and Travis elementaries, Mann and Cooper middle schools and Pfeiffer and Carroll academies.
The district will begin listening to public input
Wednesday at the six schools before a school board meeting on Feb. 25 where they may take final action, according to district officials.
