SAN ANTONIO -- Speaking through an interpreter, a woman on trial for physically abusing an elderly woman in her care said she was frustrated and stressed out.
Alma Berlanga admitted slapping and hurriedly feeding 84-year-old Ofelia Escobar after losing her temper.
"Those were the results, and I'm sorry," Berlanga said through an interpreter. "I mentioned that to the children of the lady, it was never my intention to hurt the lady."
Berlanga was recorded by Irma Escobar, the blind, bedridden woman's daughter, after she suspected her mother was being abused in Berlanga's care.
A conviction of causing injury to the elderly, a third-degree felony, carries a punishment ranging from two to 10 years in prison.
