SAN ANTONIO -- A study released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said one in four teenager girls has at least one sexually transmitted disease, which came as news to some San Antonio teens.
But prevention of the spread of STDs is something teens should be talking about among themselves as well as their parents, said one area doctor.
"It's not just one talk," said Kristen Plastino of the UT Health Science Center. "It's a talk over years and that's what we have to remember."
Plastino said parents should teach their children early about STDs and prevention, as well as pushing abstinence.
"The sexual revolution is over, and the diseases won," she said. "Having multiple sexual partners is not healthy."
One of the most common STDs is human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer. Plastino said a new vaccine, Gardasil, is the best way to protect young females from at least four different strains of HPV.
