SAN ANTONIO -- Jurors in the trial of a woman accused of drowning her boyfriend's son heard the child's father testify about the warning family members gave him about his girlfriend.
Ronnie Fox said that while Veronica Herrera seemed slow at times, he didn't believe she was mentally deficient, as her defense has claimed in the trial.
He also contradicted earlier testimony from Herrera's mother, claiming she, along with other family and friends, told Fox Herrera was mildly retarded with an IQ about 50.
"'As long as she's happy, we're happy;' That's the only thing they ever told me," Fox said. "They didn't tell me she's capable of doing this and that and that. I would never have her take care of my son, my most precious thing."
Herrera is accused of holding 3-year-old Andrew Fox under a faucet pouring scalding water in 2005. She faces a maximum punishment of life in prison if convicted.
Testimony is expected to continue Thursday.
