Woman Found Guilty In Child Drowning Trial

POSTED: Monday, March 24, 2008
UPDATED: 7:44 pm CDT March 24, 2008

Jurors needed about 90 minutes to convict a woman on trial for drowning her boyfriend's 3-year-old son in 2005.

Veronica Herrera showed no visible reaction as the verdict was read, only sitting down once it was finished. The woman, who defense attorneys claimed was mentally retarded and unable to care for a child, confessed to police that she held 3-year-old Andrew Fox under a spigot of scalding water when she became frustrated by his pleas to see his father.

The punishment phase of her trial got under way immediately following the verdict and is expected to continue Tuesday. Herrera faces a maximum punishment of life in prison.
