USPS Truck Crashes; Some Mail Destroyed

POSTED: Tuesday, March 25, 2008
UPDATED: 6:57 pm CDT March 25, 2008

A United States Postal Service truck crashed en route from Dallas to San Antonio on Monday and caught fire and damaged or destroyed 30 containers of mail, officials said.

Some of the mail was burned to the point that notifying residents about it will not be possible, USPS officials said.

Mail containing a legible address or return address will be reprocessed and delivered as soon as possible, USPS officials said.

"Unfortunately, there is no way to tell how much mail was actually destroyed to where it's no longer available," said James Coultress, a USPS official in San Antonio. "We do have a lot of mail that wasn't burned that's available and it will take us quite a while to process that mail."

Coultress said that residents with questions or concerns can call 210-368-8498 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

USPS, though, will not be able to verify whether a particular piece of mail was involved in the accident.
