SAN ANTONIO -- A man led police on a wild chase Sunday, and at one point threatened to blow up himself, police said.
Police said a bizarre chains started with a domestic disturbance at a residence on the city's Northwest Side.
When police went to the home, the man, who police said is in his 50s, took off and led them on a chase, ending with a standoff near some railroad tracks on Arroyo Vista and West Avenue.
"Police cars were going up and down this street, at speeds, I mean maybe 60 miles an hour," said Arroyo Vista resident Joe Flores.
The man also rammed a police car and clipped a neighbor's house with his sport utility vehicle, police said.
"They started yelling at him, you know, to get out of the car, to put his hands up. The guy wouldn't respond," a neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
Police said the man was on oxygen for medical reasons and had been taking medication to control his bipolar disorder.
"He had two oxygen tanks inside the vehicle that he had let the oxygen out of, and threatened to ignite it," said Sgt. Kevin Reser of the San Antonio Police Department.
"He actually ran out of his medicine. As soon as he's not on his medicine, he's having problems," Flores said.
"I saw the officers running with their guns out, and pointing them at the guy," the anonymous neighbor said. "I thought they were going to kill the guy."
Police said that after a few tense minutes, a negotiator talked the man out of his car and he surrendered without incident, much to the relief of neighbors.
"You don't know what's going on, you know. And you don't know if the guy has a weapon and whatever and start firing," the neighbor said. "I'm glad everything turned out OK."
Police said will be charged with domestic violence and for ramming the police cruiser.
