SAN ANTONIO -- Three people have been killed by allegedly drunken drivers in the last few days, and San Antonio's police chief wants to remind residents that the consequences from drunken driving are set to increase in a month.
A pair of teenagers were killed in separate accidents; 19-year-old Angelina Medina died when her car was hit by an alleged drunken driver Monday evening, and a 19-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving slammed into a utility pole on Donaldson Avenue Tuesday evening. Police said they found open beer cans in his vehicle.
Earlier Tuesday evening, 42-year-old Amelia Arce Trevino died when she was ejected from the vehicle her husband, who police said they believe was intoxicated, lost control of their vehicle and smashed into several trees along North Loop Road.
SAPD Chief William McManus wanted to remind people that beginning on Memorial Day, people can not refuse a Breathalyzer test, saying his officers would obtain search warrants if necessary.
Currently, Texas law only allows for mandatory blood testing if a person is killed in a suspected drunken driving accident.
The new rules are part of a program created by the Bexar County District Attorney's office.
