SAN ANTONIO -- Family members of a local restaurateur killed last week announced Wednesday of the creation of a charitable foundation in her name.
Viola's Huge Heart Foundation was created by family members in memory of Viola Barrios, who was found slain in her burning home last week. The foundation will continue in the giving spirit of its namesake, family members said.
One of the main goals for the foundation is expected to include converting Barrios' old home in Bustamante, Mexico, into a refuge for people with nowhere else to go, her daughter said.
"For orphans or for the elderly who are abandoned by their families," Teresa Ogden said. "There are no nursing homes in Bustamante (and) we have no orphanages in Bustamante."
The family also addressed the upcoming prosecution of 18-year-old Joe Estrada Jr., the teenager who lived next door to Barrios and is now charged with capital murder in connection with her death.
"The justice system needs to do its course, and that is (Bexar County District Attorney) Susan Reed's ... decision on how she's going to handle that," son Louis Barrios said. "We don't want to do her job for her."
On the day of his mother's funeral, Louis Barrios initially announced that his family would pay for the defense of Estrada, but later recanted his offer when informed by family attorneys of possible appeals should the Barrios family become involved in Estrada's defense.
Estrada is currently facing a charge of capital murder and prosecutors have not made a formal announcement on whether they intend to seek the death penalty.
