Police: Mother Smothered Baby Left In Dryer

Police said a 23-year-old woman admitted to smothering her child and placing the newborn in a clothes dryer at a drug rehabilitation facility shortly after her birth Friday.

Alicia Carranza was arrested and charged with capital murder after residents of the Victory Home drug rehabilitation facility found the newborn girl in a clothes dryer early Friday evening.

"After giving birth, she actually admitted to detectives she actually smothered the child," SAPD spokesman Joe Rios said. "She was arrested for capital murder."

Police said they found blood in the treatment center's restroom and other evidence in Carranza's bed at the facility on the 1000 block of SW 38th Street.

Rios encouraged any woman in a similar situation to take advantage of the state's Baby Moses law, which allows for any child up to 2 months old to be dropped off at specially-marked facilities across the state with no questions asked.

"If you feel you're in the circumstance where you can't take care of your child, there's always (Child Protective Services), there's always foster homes, there's always something you can do besides hurting the baby," Rios said.

The facility houses about 140 people and does not allow pregnant woman to live at the home, facility officials said.

After giving birth, Carranza lifted her shirt to show off her flat stomach to another resident of the rehab facility, according to the arrest affidavit. Police also became suspicious when Carranza complained she wasn't feeling well and went into shock, the affidavit read.

Carranza is currently recovering from the childbirth and will be transported to the Bexar County Jail when she is discharged.
