8 Sex Offenders Attend SA Public Schools

UPDATED: 10:51 am CDT May 13, 2008

Eight school-age sex offenders are enrolled in public schools within two of San Antonio's school districts, according to state records.

A search by KSAT 12 News obtained the records of eight registered juvenile sex offenders attending school in San Antonio with the number split between the Northside and North East independent school districts.

Of the four in the NISD, two students attend O'Connor High School, one at Stevens and another at John Jay. Citing privacy laws, NEISD officials declined to identify which schools the four students attend.

Some of the offenders are as young as 15 years old, according to state records.

"We have sex offenders with very minor type, what I call 'Romeo and Juliet' scenario," state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte said. "And we have predators."

A spokesman for NISD said federal laws prevent district officials from identifying a sex offender student as well as informing parents about the student's attendance in its school.

"We do know who these students are, so we are careful to monitor where they are and what they are doing and who they are spending time with," district spokesman Brian Woods said.

A September 2007 law now requires newly registered school-age sex offenders to attend alternative schools, but the law doesn't specify how long they must attend nor prohibit them from returning to the general school population.
