SAN ANTONIO -- There was a lot of work happening at the Bikini Car Wash on the city's south side Tuesday -- but none of the workers were in two-piece swimsuits.
Construction workers were working fast to satisfy the requests made by the San Antonio Water System and the city of San Antonio last week, prompting the temporary revocation of the businesses' certificate of occupancy.
The bikini-clad women caused a fuss last week as businesses and churches sought to have the car wash shut down. A city councilwoman, along with a neighborhood association, agreed.
"It does not provide a good environment for our students that go to elementaries in the area and we are here to see it closed," District 3 City Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos said last week.
The city closed the business down after SAWS found drainage violations, but the car wash owner said with the renovations, he's ready to re-open and placate some of his neighbors' concerns.
"We're going to go over there and pick up our (certificate of occupancy) and be ready to open up tomorrow afternoon," Ricardo Arsate said. "I'm going to ask the girls to tone it down. I want to be friendly with the community, I want everybody to be happy about us being here and not be upset."
The president of the area's neighborhood association questioned whether the car wash should be allowed to re-open.
"It's immoral and it's something that degrades our community," Mission San Jose Neighborhood Association president Armando Cortez said.
The bikini girls made a promotional appearance Tuesday afternoon in anticipation of the re-opening, but SAWS officials who went to inspect the business did not give an all-clear, saying additional plumbing repairs were necessary.
