SAN ANTONIO -- Two members of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints picked up a small victory Tuesday as they were granted a temporary restraining order to keep the state from taking custody of the couple’s son.
The state was scheduled to take custody of Joseph and Lori Jessop’s son when he turned 1 year old. The state already has custody of the couple’s other children. The Jessops are hoping that Tuesday’s ruling will lead to reuniting them with their other two children.
The Jessops were separated from their children when state authorities raided the FLDS compound in El Dorado last month. Joseph Jessop saw his children for the first time just Monday. The couple said the last month has been difficult, especially on the children.
“They don't get it, it's really hard especially for my 2 year old,” Lori Jessop said. “He begs to come with me.”
The Jessops said they’ve offered to leave the church to convince the state to give them back their kids, but that the state isn’t convinced. Another hearing has been scheduled for next week to determine if they’ll be given custody of all of their kids.
